Current Issues for the Council
These are some of the issues the Council has focused on recently.
-
Mendocino County Budget and Debt: From 1997 through 2002 our County was almost at the top of California Counties in increasing numbers and payroll of county employees. Not only was this unaffordable as evidenced by several years of budget deficits, but this is massively unfair to the thousands of private sector workers who have to pay for it but who make much less. And now we learn that the County is going to be forced to recognize unfunded retiree health benefits as debt, which could add millions more obligation for the taxpayers.
-
Smart Growth: One of the most rapidly emerging planning issues in the County is "Smart Growth". This presents a short introduction, links to advocates and critics, and a link to the Ukiah Smart Growth Coalition.
-
Ukiah Valley Area Plan (UVAP): 15 years ago the County began to develop a subset of the County General Plan for the Ukiah Valley. A Draft EIR was recently released for public comment. This page has links to County documents concerning UVAP and the Employers Council written comments on the draft EIR.
- Immediate Threat to Current Inland Water Supply: We could be hit with water cutbacks over the next few years that will shock us.
